Greening the Churchyard
In Spring 2024, we were able to make a number of changes in the churchyard to encourage and support wildlife. A small team came together to install bird, bug, hedgehog and bee boxes. A wide variety of native bulbs and perennials were planted to provide food for pollinators. A herb garden was planted. A new shrubbery border was dug and filled with trees and shrubs which support wildlife.
This work would not have been possible without the support of some very dedicated volunteers, the Soham Village College CATS group, the church PCC, Soham Town Council and the Diocese of Ely.
This event was part of the project, ‘In the Footsteps of St Felix’ and was funded by The National Heritage Lottery Fund.

Archaeological Digs
In July, students from Soham Village College joined Wessex Archaeology for another chance to find out, what lies beneath the ground in Soham? Six ‘test pits’ were dug in local gardens. This year’s star ‘finds’ included clay pipes, pottery, worked flint, glass and animal bones.
The dig was part of the project, ‘In the Footsteps of St Felix’ and was possible thanks to funding from The National Heritage Lottery Fund.

Creating an Archaeological Mini-dig in the Classroom
We used the learning from our community dig to create a FREE education resource for teachers.
Students use a shoe box and layer objects and materials from different historic periods to create a stratified dig site for their peers to excavate.
The resource was developed with professional archaeologists from Wessex Archaeology and piloted with staff and students at St Andrew's CE Primary School.
The resource was funded by The National Heritage Lottery Fund as part of the project ‘In the Footsteps of St Felix’.

Medieval Fair
Knights fighting in the churchyard. A Yarnsmith telling a pretty tale. A medieval jester practising circus skills. And nearly fifty wonderful community groups, makers, craftspeople, reenactors and more… made for a joyful day in Church and Churchyard to celebrate the successful completion of the ‘In the Footsteps of St Felix’ project. Over 700 visitors joined us for this special day.
